It's one of the questions we hear most from first-time visitors planning a China trip: start with Beijing, or Shanghai? The honest answer is that both belong on most itineraries — but if you can only pick one to start with, here's how they compare.
Beijing: History & Imperial China
Beijing is the place for the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven and the Summer Palace — the landmarks most people picture when they think of China. It's a city built around centuries of imperial history, wide boulevards and hutong alleyways, and it makes a strong first impression for travellers who want context before exploring the rest of the country.
Shanghai: Modern China
Shanghai is the flip side of the coin — a global financial hub with a dramatic skyline along the Bund, colonial-era architecture, world-class shopping and a fast-paced, cosmopolitan energy. It's also a common entry point for business travellers and a natural base for exploring nearby water towns and the Yangtze Delta.
Quick Comparison
- Beijing: imperial landmarks, the Great Wall, deeper history
- Shanghai: skyline views, shopping, modern city energy
- Beijing: cooler winters, drier climate overall
- Shanghai: milder winters, more humid summers
Our Honest Take
If your trip is mainly about culture and history, start in Beijing. If you're combining travel with business or want a taste of contemporary China first, Shanghai is the easier landing point. Either way, the two cities are well connected by high-speed rail, so most of our clients see both on the same trip rather than choosing between them.
Planning Both?
A common route we build is Beijing → Xi'an → Shanghai, giving you imperial history, the Terracotta Warriors and a modern skyline finish, all connected by bullet train. Browse our China Destinations page or ask us about a Customised Tour that fits your dates and interests.
