China is a country the size of a continent, so "the best time to visit" really depends on where you're going and what you want to do. Here's how we plan travel dates for our clients through the year.
Spring (March – May)
Spring is one of the most popular windows for first-time visitors. Temperatures across Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai and the Yangtze region are mild, gardens and cherry blossoms are in bloom in places like Suzhou and Hangzhou, and the harsh winter crowds haven't arrived yet. Late April also overlaps with the spring session of the Canton Fair, so it's a busy time for business travellers as well.
Summer (June – August)
Summer suits travellers heading to the north and to mountain or coastal regions — Harbin, Zhangjiajie's cooler highlands, and Hainan's beaches all work well in this window. Central and southern cities such as Chongqing and Guangzhou can get hot and humid, so we usually recommend pairing city stops with air-conditioned transport and indoor sightseeing during peak afternoon heat.
Autumn (September – November)
Many of our clients call autumn the sweet spot. Skies are generally clear, humidity drops, and the Li River around Guilin & Yangshuo, the terraced landscapes of Zhangjiajie and the ancient towns of Yunnan all look their best. October also brings the autumn session of the Canton Fair, so book hotels early if you're combining business with leisure.
Winter (December – February)
Winter isn't for everyone, but it has two big draws: the Harbin Ice and Snow Festival, one of the most spectacular winter events in the world, and noticeably thinner crowds at major sites like the Great Wall and the Forbidden City. Chinese New Year (dates vary each year) is a wonderful cultural experience but also the busiest domestic travel period in the country, so plan well ahead if your dates fall around it.
Quick Season Picks
- First-time sightseeing (Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai): March–May or September–November
- Canton Fair & business trips: mid-April and mid-October
- Winter festival travel: late December–February (Harbin)
- Beach & island escapes: Hainan, almost any time of year
Our Advice
If your dates are flexible, aim for spring or autumn for the most comfortable weather across the widest range of destinations. If they aren't — because you're travelling for the Canton Fair, a festival, or school holidays — we'll help you build an itinerary around the season you're stuck with, so the trip still feels well-timed rather than rushed.
